Chin Liposuction (Double Chin / Submental Liposuction)
Chin liposuction removes selected superficial fat beneath the chin through a small incision and fine cannulas. The aim is not to promise the same sharply defined jawline for everyone, but to create a more balanced transition between the lower face and neck when skin quality and anatomy are suitable.
What Causes a Double Chin?
A double chin describes fullness or looseness between the underside of the chin and upper neck. It is not always caused by excess body weight. Genetics, the distribution of submental fat, a small or recessed chin, neck anatomy, loss of skin elasticity and platysma laxity may all contribute.
Why can slim people have a double chin?
A slim person may still carry localised fat beneath the chin. Chin projection and neck anatomy can also make a relatively small fat deposit appear more prominent.
Will losing weight remove a double chin?
Weight loss may reduce fullness when general weight gain is the main cause. It may not correct genetically localised fat, loose skin, weak chin projection or muscle laxity.
Who Is Suitable for Chin Liposuction?
The best candidates tend to have localised fat beneath the chin and skin with enough elasticity to adapt after volume reduction. The procedure can be considered for women and men. It is a contouring operation, not a weight-loss treatment.
Chin liposuction may suit you if

How Is Chin Liposuction Performed?
I make a small incision beneath the chin and use fine cannulas to remove superficial fat in a controlled manner. I usually prefer conventional liposuction in this area. The goal is not to remove the maximum possible amount of fat; it is to create an even contour without visible surface irregularity.
Local or general anaesthesia?
Chin liposuction can be performed under local anaesthesia when it is the only procedure, allowing same-day discharge. In my practice it is often combined with another operation, so general anaesthesia is more common and I keep the patient in hospital for one night.
Is a drain used?
I do not routinely use a drain after chin liposuction. The small incision, dressing, garment and massage plan are adjusted to the tissue and any procedures performed at the same time.

Submental Fat or Loose Neck Skin: Why the Difference Matters
This distinction is central to planning. Liposuction reduces fat; it does not excise loose skin or repair the platysma. If skin quality is poor, removing fat can make laxity more visible.
When there is substantial skin excess or neck laxity, a neck lift may be more appropriate. Jowls are lower-face tissues beside the jaw rather than fat directly beneath the chin; when jowling and lower-face laxity dominate, I assess the area in the context of a facelift.
How Can a Double Chin Be Reduced?

The term “double-chin removal” may refer to devices, injections, exercises or surgery. The right option cannot be chosen until we identify whether the appearance comes mainly from fat, skin, muscle or the underlying chin and neck structure.
Chin Liposuction Recovery, Swelling and Compression Garment
After a stand-alone procedure under local anaesthesia, the patient can return home the same day. For general anaesthesia and combined surgery, I use one night of hospital observation. I do not routinely use a drain. Showering is allowed on day five. Desk work and driving can resume quickly when the patient feels comfortable and is no longer affected by anaesthetic or pain medication. I ask patients to avoid heavy exercise for six weeks.
How long is the chin strap worn?
I usually recommend the compression garment for approximately one week. Its purpose is to help the tissues settle evenly and reduce irregular adhesion, not to create extreme pressure. It should not be excessively tight.
Do you recommend lymphatic massage?
Yes. I routinely recommend lymphatic massage, with timing and technique guided by the follow-up examination. Forceful or uncontrolled massage is not appropriate in the early period.
When do swelling and firmness settle?
Swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary firmness are expected in the first days. Recovery varies with the amount of fat removed, skin quality, personal swelling tendency and any accompanying procedure. The first-week appearance is not the final result.
Chin Liposuction Before and After: When Is the Result Visible?
As swelling settles, the reduction beneath the chin and the change in the chin-to-neck transition become easier to assess. Definition depends on more than the amount of fat removed; skin contraction, chin projection and neck anatomy also matter.
Chin liposuction cannot promise complete removal of every double chin or an identical sharp jawline in every patient. In a suitable candidate, the aim is a lighter, more balanced lower-face and neck contour that fits the person’s proportions.
Is Chin Liposuction Permanent?
Fat cells removed from the treated area are permanently removed. The remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain, while ageing and changes in skin elasticity may alter the neck contour over time. The procedure can provide lasting volume reduction, but it cannot freeze the appearance for life.
Maintaining a stable weight supports the result. Later skin laxity does not necessarily mean that liposuction has failed; skin and muscle continue to age differently from fat tissue.
What Are the Risks of Chin Liposuction?
Possible problems include bleeding, haematoma, seroma, infection, prolonged swelling, firmness, altered sensation, asymmetry, contour irregularity, under- or over-correction, skin waviness, more visible laxity and the need for revision. Temporary or permanent injury to the marginal mandibular nerve is uncommon but important.
What Affects Chin Liposuction Cost in Istanbul?
Chin liposuction cost depends on whether it is performed alone under local anaesthesia or as part of a combined operation under general anaesthesia, as well as the hospital setting, surgical scope and whether a neck or facial procedure is needed at the same time.
If examination shows that loose skin or chin structure is the main issue, choosing liposuction solely because of price would be inappropriate. The first decision is whether the operation can realistically address the patient’s concern.

I ask patients to wait six weeks before heavy exercise. Light daily activity is individualised according to recovery and any combined surgery.
Does chin liposuction leave a scar?
There is a small incision beneath the chin. It usually fades, but no surgical incision can be guaranteed to become completely invisible.
How do you tell submental fat from loose skin?
Examination assesses fat thickness, skin elasticity, platysma activity and chin-neck anatomy. Significant laxity may not respond well to liposuction alone.
Can it be combined with a neck lift?
