Stretch Mark Treatment with RF Microneedling (Exion RF)
I do not promise the same result for every stretch mark. Whether the marks are new and red or mature and white, their location, depth and the patient’s skin quality all affect response. In my practice I use Exion RF microneedling to reduce the visible and textural difference of stretch marks.

What Are Stretch Marks and Why Do They Form?
Stretch marks, or striae distensae, are linear changes in the dermis that develop when skin cannot adapt to rapid growth, stretching or volume change. Pregnancy, rapid weight change, adolescent growth, bodybuilding and some hormonal conditions are common associations.
They may occur on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, legs, back, arms and breast skin. Stretch marks on breast skin are different from nipple fissures related to breastfeeding. Sudden, extensive marks or marks accompanied by other symptoms should be medically assessed before an aesthetic treatment plan is made.
Red vs White Stretch Marks: Does Their Age Matter?
Red, pink or purple stretch marks
Striae rubrae are the earlier stage. Their vascular component is more visible, although they may look dark brown rather than red in some skin tones. Newer stretch marks generally tend to respond better to treatment.
White or silvery stretch marks
Striae albae are older, paler and more mature marks with scar-like features. Their appearance can still be improved, but the response is usually more limited and less predictable than with early red marks.
For both types, the aim is to reduce width, depth, textural difference and visibility—not to promise complete removal.
How Does RF Microneedling (Exion RF) Treat Stretch Marks?
Exion RF delivers radiofrequency energy to selected skin depths through microneedles. This controlled tissue response supports collagen and elastin remodelling. It is the treatment I routinely use for stretch marks; I do not list laser, PRP, fibroblast, stem cell injections or mesotherapy as routine stretch-mark services in my clinic.
Topical anaesthesia and treatment
We apply topical anaesthetic cream before treatment. Needle depth and energy are adjusted according to the area, skin thickness and characteristics of the marks.
Number and timing of sessions
I advise a course of four sessions and plan a minimum of three. Rather than repeating treatment on a rigid calendar date, we wait for redness and sensitivity from the previous session to settle. This is commonly around 10 days.
Because collagen remodelling continues over time, I assess the final response about six months after the last session. You can read about the technology’s wider indications on the Exion RF page.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
Abdomen
Abdominal stretch marks after pregnancy or weight change are among the areas we assess most frequently.
Hips and buttocks
Marks related to growth, weight change or genetic tendency may be treated according to their colour, depth and surface area.
Thighs
Linear marks on the inner or outer thighs are planned after considering skin thickness and the size of the treatment area.
In my practice I routinely treat the abdomen, hips and thighs. Suitability of other areas is assessed individually.
Who Is a Suitable Candidate?
Exion RF may be considered for patients who want to reduce the colour and textural contrast of stretch marks on the abdomen, hips or thighs and who understand that treatment cannot erase them completely. Skin type, age and colour of the marks, size of the area, active skin disease or infection, medicines and individual healing all influence planning.
I do not perform this treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Open wounds, active infection, relevant skin disease, medicines or conditions that affect bleeding should be disclosed before treatment.
Aftercare: Showering, Exercise and Daily Activities
Expected early reaction
Redness, sensitivity and mild swelling vary between patients and commonly settle within three days to one week. We wait for this reaction to resolve before the next session.
Showering and exercise
Following an uncomplicated treatment, showering and normal daily activities can resume the next day. Light exercise may also resume then; I advise waiting at least 48 hours before strenuous exercise that causes marked heat and sweating, and only returning once the skin reaction has settled.
Avoid prolonged direct sun while redness or sensitivity remains. Sauna, steam rooms and very hot environments should also wait until the reaction has resolved. Follow the individual sun-protection plan for any exposed treatment area.
Can Stretch Marks Be Removed Completely?
No. My aim with Exion RF is to reduce width, depth and the visible surface difference from surrounding skin. New red marks tend to respond better, but no colour or body area carries a guarantee of complete removal or a fixed improvement percentage. Results depend on skin biology, the age of the marks, the treatment area and completion of the course.
What Affects the Cost of Stretch Mark Treatment?
Cost depends on the size and number of treatment areas and the planned number of sessions. Treating a limited abdominal area is a different scope from treating the abdomen, both hips and both thighs. A clear plan and price can therefore be given after assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do red or white stretch marks respond better?
New red, pink or purple marks generally tend to respond better. Mature white marks may still improve, but their response is often more limited.
How many sessions are needed?
I advise four sessions and plan at least three. A new session is performed after the previous tissue reaction has settled, commonly at around 10 days.
Is RF microneedling painful?
We apply topical anaesthetic cream. Sensitivity varies according to the area and the individual.
Can treatment be performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. I do not perform Exion RF stretch-mark treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
When can postpartum stretch marks be assessed?
Assessment is made after pregnancy and breastfeeding have ended, based on the current condition of the skin.
When can I shower and exercise?
Showering and light exercise can resume the next day. Wait at least 48 hours before strenuous exercise and until redness and sensitivity have settled.
Can stretch marks be removed completely?
No. Treatment aims to reduce their visibility and textural difference; complete removal cannot be guaranteed.
Can Exion RF leave marks?
Temporary pinpoint redness can occur. Pigment change or scarring is uncommon but cannot be reduced to zero even with appropriate settings and aftercare.
When are results assessed?
Because tissue remodelling develops over months, I assess the final response about six months after the last session.
Does a tummy tuck remove all abdominal stretch marks?
A tummy tuck can only remove marks located within the skin that is excised; it does not erase every remaining abdominal mark. See the tummy tuck guide for the surgical boundary.
