The Pros and Cons of Breast Implant Surgery

💬 Why Did I Write This Post?

Patients researching breast augmentation surgery online usually come across two extremes of opinion. On the one hand, there is content that portrays the surgery as entirely flawless; on the other, there are reviews that describe only negative experiences.

The truth, however, lies somewhere between the two.

As a plastic surgeon who has been specialising in breast aesthetics for around 15 years, I can say this: breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that achieves an extremely high satisfaction rate in the right patients. However, no surgical procedure is entirely risk-free.

On this page, I won’t be trying to persuade you to have surgery. My aim is to help you make a more informed decision by weighing up the pros and cons.

The Main Benefits of Breast Augmentation Surgery

1. A More Balanced Body Proportion

The aim of breast augmentation surgery is not merely to add volume.
A correctly chosen implant can create a more balanced silhouette in relation to the proportions of the shoulders, waist and hips. This change can be particularly noticeable in women with naturally small breasts or in patients who have experienced a loss of volume following childbirth.
The first thing most of my patients mention is not that their breasts have grown, but that their clothes now fit them better.

2. Increased Self-Confidence

Breast augmentation surgery is not performed to resolve psychological issues.
However, it is common to see an increase in self-confidence following the procedure in many women who have been unhappy with the size of their breasts for years.

In particular;

  • who avoids wearing a bikini,
  • who feel compelled to wear a non-padded bra,
  • who always chooses her clothes to match her breasts

A marked change in quality of life may be observed in individuals.

3. Long-lasting results

Modern silicone implants are quite different from those of previous years.
The implants used today do not have a specific ‘replacement date’. Unless any problems arise, they do not need to be replaced routinely every 10 years.
For this reason, breast augmentation is one of the cosmetic procedures whose results can last for many years.

4. A Natural Look Can Be Achieved

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Will we find out?”

When the right patient is selected, the appropriate implant size is chosen and the correct surgical technique is used, it is possible to achieve a very natural-looking result following breast augmentation surgery.
The key factor here is not so much the size of the implant, but rather planning the procedure to suit the individual’s anatomy.

5. It Can Correct Asymmetry

Many women’s breasts are not perfectly symmetrical.
In some patients, this difference may be pronounced enough to affect their daily lives.
During breast augmentation surgery, this asymmetry can be significantly reduced by using implants of different sizes or additional surgical techniques.

The Disadvantages of Breast Augmentation Surgery

Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation also has some disadvantages.

It would not be right to make a decision without knowing these things.

1. It is a surgical procedure

Although breast augmentation is a safe procedure, it is, after all, a surgical procedure carried out under general anaesthesia.
The risk of complications such as bleeding, infection or problems with wound healing is not entirely zero.

2. There is no guarantee that implants will remain problem-free for life

Implants are very durable.
However, over the years;

  • capsular contracture,
  • implant rupture,
  • change of position

Revision surgery may be necessary for reasons such as these.
For this reason, one should not approach breast augmentation surgery with the mindset that ‘I will never need another procedure for the rest of my life’.

3. The First Few Weeks Require Patience

In the early days;

  • tension,
  • oedema,
  • restricted movement

These are to be expected.
It is necessary to wait not just a few weeks, but a few months, to assess the final outcome.

4. A Trace Remains

No matter how carefully the incision is closed, a scar will form following surgery.
Although scars fade noticeably over time in most patients, they do not disappear completely.

5. It is a sound financial investment

Breast augmentation is not just about the cost of the implants.
Having the operation carried out in a safe hospital by an experienced team is far more important in terms of long-term results.
For this reason, basing your decision solely on price is not the right approach.

Who Tends to Be More Satisfied?

Research and my own clinical experience show that the highest level of satisfaction is achieved when;

  • who have realistic expectations,
  • where an implant has been selected to suit the patient’s anatomy,
  • who decided to undergo surgery of their own free will,
  • who are patient throughout the recovery process

It is observed in patients.

Who Should Reconsider Their Decision?

In some cases, it may be more appropriate to postpone or reassess the operation.

For example;

  • those who are planning to become pregnant very soon,
  • those currently actively trying to lose weight,
  • those expecting perfect symmetry,
  • those considering having surgery at the request of someone else,
  • people with very unrealistic expectations.

Conclusion: Pros or Cons?

Breast augmentation surgery has both its advantages and its disadvantages.

The important thing is not to focus on just one of these, but to consider your own expectations, lifestyle and state of health as a whole.

I tell every patient the same thing:

For the right patient, breast augmentation surgery can improve their quality of life. However, surgery carried out at the wrong time or with unrealistic expectations may not provide the same level of satisfaction.

For this reason, the best approach would be to take your time, weigh up all your options and make your decision in consultation with a plastic surgeon you trust.

The Most Common Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation Surgery

Much of the information circulating online about breast augmentation surgery is either based on outdated techniques or consists of hearsay. As a result, many patients may be unduly concerned about risks that are actually very unlikely, whilst overlooking certain issues that do require attention.

Here are the most common misconceptions I’m asked about during consultations:

❌ “Silicone implants must be replaced every 10 years.”

This is one of the most common misconceptions.

In previous years, implant technologies were not as advanced as they are today. High-quality breast implants used today do not have a specific ‘use-by date’.

Unless there is any tearing, capsular contracture, deformity or any other condition causing the patient discomfort, implants do not need to be replaced simply because they have reached the end of their lifespan.

Follow-up check-ups, however, should not be neglected.

❌ “Breast implants can burst.”

Modern silicone implants do not burst easily in everyday life.

Flying, playing sport or engaging in normal physical activities will not cause the implant to burst.

Rare cases of implant rupture, on the other hand, are usually caused by wear and tear that develops over the years or by severe trauma.

❌ “I won’t be able to breastfeed after a breast augmentation.”

When planned correctly, breast augmentation surgery preserves the ability to breastfeed in most women.

Of course, as with any surgical procedure, it is not possible to say that there is absolutely no risk; however, it is not to be expected that breastfeeding will cease entirely solely as a result of breast augmentation surgery.

❌ “The breasts look artificial.”

The reason for an unnatural appearance is often not the implant itself, but the choice of the wrong implant.

A person’s;

  • chest width,
  • leather quality,
  • breast tissue,
  • lifestyle

If these factors are considered together and the correct volume is selected, the result can look quite natural.

❌ “Breast cancer screening cannot be carried out.”

Mammograms and other imaging techniques can also be carried out on women with breast implants.

It is sufficient for the radiology team to be aware of the presence of an implant. Where necessary, additional methods such as ultrasound or breast MRI may also be used.

The presence of an implant does not prevent you from having regular breast check-ups.

So, what do scientific studies say?

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures worldwide, and patient satisfaction rates are very high.

In international studies, in the majority of breast augmentation operations performed on suitable candidates;

  • an improvement in quality of life,
  • improvements in body image,
  • increased self-confidence,
  • a high level of aesthetic satisfaction

has been reported.

However, the same studies show that the most important determinant of patient satisfaction is not so much the brand or size of the implant, but rather appropriate patient selection and realistic expectations.

That is why, before deciding on surgery, I recommend that my patients read these two guides first:

I don’t think it makes much sense to discuss the brand of implant or the volume to be used until these two issues have been clarified.

Before Making Your Final Decision, Ask Yourself the Following Questions

There are no right or wrong answers to these questions. However, the answers you give may help you work out whether now is the right time for you to have breast augmentation surgery.

✓ Do I really want this operation?

✓ Are my expectations realistic?

✓ Will I be able to set aside time for the recovery process?

✓ Do I have any plans to become pregnant or lose a significant amount of weight in the near future?

✓ Do I accept both the advantages and the disadvantages of the operation?

✓ Was my decision influenced by social media, or was it based on my own long-standing desire?

If you can confidently answer ‘yes’ to most of these questions, breast augmentation surgery may be a suitable option for you. However, the final decision should be made after taking into account the findings of your examination, your state of health and your expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the advantages of breast augmentation outweigh the disadvantages?

There is no single correct answer to this. For suitable candidates, breast augmentation is one of the cosmetic procedures with the highest patient satisfaction rates. However, like any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks, and it is important to be aware of these risks before the operation. It is important not merely to focus on the benefits, but to make an informed decision by also accepting the potential drawbacks.

Do breast implants always need to be replaced over time?

No. High-quality breast implants used today do not have a specific replacement timeframe. Unless any problems arise, there is no need to replace the implants simply because several years have passed. However, regular check-ups with your doctor should not be neglected.

Is it possible to look natural after breast augmentation surgery?

Yes. A natural result depends not so much on the size of the implant as on choosing an implant that suits the individual’s anatomy. When the structure of the ribcage, existing breast tissue and skin quality are assessed together, very natural results can be achieved.

Will breast augmentation surgery prevent me from breastfeeding in the future?

Not in most patients. When the surgical technique is properly planned, the milk glands and milk ducts are largely preserved. However, as with any surgical procedure, it cannot be said to be entirely risk-free, and this matter should be discussed in detail with your doctor before the operation.

Can I exercise after breast augmentation surgery?

Yes. Once the recovery process is complete, you can take part in most sports, including swimming, fitness training, Pilates and weight training. However, it is important to avoid activities that strain the chest muscles for the first few weeks and to follow your surgeon’s advice.

Can breast augmentation surgery be reversed?

Yes. If desired, implants can be removed or replaced at a later date. However, following the removal of an implant, the appearance of the breast may vary depending on the size of the implant, the length of time it has been in place, and the elasticity of the skin. For this reason, the decision to remove an implant must be planned just as carefully as the initial operation.

Final Words

Breast augmentation surgery has both its advantages and its disadvantages.

The important thing is not just to consider one of these factors, but to assess your own expectations, lifestyle and state of health as a whole.

Throughout my professional career of around 15 years, I have observed that the happiest patients are those who are aware of both the benefits and the limitations of surgery from the very outset. This is because accurate information leads to realistic expectations; and realistic expectations, in turn, form the basis for long-term satisfaction.

If you’re still trying to make up your mind, I’d recommend taking a look at the following guides:

Once you have read these three pages together, you will be in a much better position to assess whether breast augmentation surgery is the right option for you.
